State Environment Impact Assessment Authority
The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) of Tamil Nadu is a statutory body established by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, under the provisions of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification of 2006. SEIAA Tamil Nadu is responsible for granting Environmental Clearance (EC) for various developmental projects categorized as 'B' in the EIA Notification.
The sixth authority of SEIAA Tamil Nadu consists of two Expert Appraisal Committees (SEAC-1 and SEAC-2), both headed by retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers serving as Chairpersons. Each SEAC comprises seven expert members from diverse fields. The State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC) evaluates the environmental implications of proposed projects and provides technical recommendations.
The primary objective of SEIAA is to ensure sustainable development by carefully assessing the potential environmental impacts of projects, including construction, mining, industrial development, infrastructure, and others within Tamil Nadu. SEIAA Tamil Nadu receives nearly 9 percent of proposals from across India. By streamlining the clearance process and enforcing environmental safeguards, it plays a crucial role in balancing economic growth with ecological preservation.
State Level Environmental Impact Assessment Authority Tamilnadu (SEIAA-TN) generally aligns with the objectives laid out under the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification, 2006 and subsequent amendment issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India.
