Every citizen has the right to request information from public authorities. The Act promotes transparency and accountability in the working of the Government and helps to check corruption.
How to File RTI Application
Prepare Your Application
Write your application in English, Hindi, or Tamil. Clearly specify the information you seek. Include your name, address, and contact details.
Pay the Required Fee
Attach application fee of ₹10 (cash/DD/IPO). BPL cardholders are exempted from fee payment.
Submit Application
Submit to Public Information Officer (PIO) or Assistant Public Information Officer (APIO) in person, by post, or online.
Receive Information
Information will be provided within 30 days (48 hours for life and liberty matters). Additional fee may be charged for voluminous information.
Appeal Process
If not satisfied, file first appeal to First Appellate Authority within 30 days. Second appeal can be filed to State Information Commission.

Exemptions from Disclosure
As per Section 8 of RTI Act, the following information is exempt from disclosure:
- Information affecting sovereignty and integrity of India
- Information affecting security, strategic, scientific interests
- Information received in confidence from foreign government
- Information affecting relations with foreign states
- Information expressly forbidden to be published by court
- Information causing contempt of court
- Information causing breach of privilege of Parliament/Legislature
- Information including commercial confidence, trade secrets
- Information affecting competitive position of third party
- Information available to person in fiduciary relationship
- Information affecting life/safety of any person
- Cabinet papers including records of deliberations
